Take a Ball Park Angus Beef Frank, add some spicy salsa, sour cream and blue corn chips and well, you're getting the idea - A Fourth of July recipe to grill and savor.

The official hot dog of Wrigley Field and Comerica Park, Ball Park Brand, a division of Sara Lee North America Retail, came up with a new hot dog recipe to help celebrate America's Independence Day.

The Ball Park brand was launched in 1957 after a request came from the owner of the Detroit Tigers baseball team. After expanding nationally, the Ball Park frank's popularity grew until it became standard fare at picnics and barbecues across the nation. In a recent survey by the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council, sixty-three percent of baseball fans cited hot dogs as the one ballpark food they could not live without.

Grilling Tips

  • Spray it before you lay it. Spray the grill rack with vegetable oil or use cooking spray before heating to prevent food from sticking and to ease clean-up.
  • Don't lose the juice. Use tongs, rather than a fork to gently turn franks, and handle as little as possible. Definitely do not cut the hot dogs/sausage. Avoid pushing down or overturning the meat or you will squeeze out the natural juices and flavor.
  • Think safety. Keep the grill away from shrubbery, paper products and other flammable objects, and be sure to keep a fire extinguisher handy.
  • Get the smoky flavor. If you prefer your grilled meats to have a smoky taste, keep the grill covered while cooking.
  • Skip the mess. When cooking grilled vegetables, like onions and green peppers, to top your Hillshire Farm Sausage/Ball Park frank, wrap them in foil to virtually eliminate the unappealing grill clean-up.
  • Get ready to dress the dog. Have lots of fun toppings ready for your guests to use to top the sausage/hot dog - everything from the traditional mustard and ketchup to grilled veggies, chili & cheese or even sour cream.
  • Don't overcook!

For the grilling fan opting for low-fat choices, Ball Park introduced both the regular Angus Beef frank and an Angus Beef frank with 33 percent less fat. For those watching their waistlines, the lower fat franks are still packed with flavor. Judge for yourself and let this author know if the taste of the lower fat franks stand up to the original.
